Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is an amorphous, transparent, and hydrophobic thermoplastic polymer that is very hard and stiff but brittle and notch-sensitive (Figure 11). PMMA, commonly known as “safety glass,” is an “acrylate” with brand names such as Plexiglas, Diakon, and Lucite.
