  • Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is an amorphous, transparent, and hydrophobic thermoplastic polymer that is very hard and stiff but brittle and notch-sensitive (Figure 11). PMMA, commonly known as “safety glass,” is an “acrylate” with brand names such as Plexiglas, Diakon, and Lucite.
PMMA in the form of sheets affords to shatter resistant panels for building windows, skylights, bulletproof security barriers, signs & displays, sanitary ware (bathtubs), LCD screens, furniture and many other applications.
